It has been a while since I valued my Patriotism,

           reflected on the strength

                   it gives me,

                           my daughters,

                                 my sons.

                                           Thought about the

                                                 privileges I enjoy

                                                     at the expense of others.

                                                              Concerned myself

                                                                      that it could all be taken away

                                                                           at the whim of some outsider,

                                                                       whose freedoms

                                                                  were not

                                                            as great as my own.

                                             And I am ashamed

                                     of a failing memory

                               that would let me forget

                        such a crucial

                  remembrance as this.

       My freedom,

             I say,

                    is my ability

                             to research the facts

                                    and then draw my own conclusions,

                                          with the compassion of an innocent child,

                                               the wisdom of a prophet of God,

                                                     and the wrath of what

                                                          may always be "Right's" defense.

                                                                And then,

                                                                       I receive that first wake up call,

                                                                            that influential hand

                                                                                that snaps me back

                                                                                    in Reality's direction.

                                                                                       " In God, I trust,"

                                                                                 I say again,

                                                                          in His judgment,

                                                                   in His tireless efforts

                                                            to teach me

                                                  the lessons

                                           of patriotism,

                                   of living,

                            of love.

                  "Do not give up on me,"

                     I beg.

                          Do not hasten your step,

                               too quickly

                                      that I should lag so far behind.

                                              I AM following,

                                                    at your heels,

                                                          listening,

                                                                learning,

                                                        trying always,

                                                 to follow

                                             your lead...
