One of our newly discovered favorites, Shan Kelly Cecilio, brings humor, energy, and tropical heat to her paintings. They flash and shimmer like funky, secular stained glass, suggesting fluid motion and brilliant sunlight.

Born on the island of Nassau, Bahamas, Ms. Kelly left her early study of commercial art and design for a career in fine art, painting in watercolors to achieve luminous, translucent layers of color and striving to convey the essence of what she sees and feels. Women are predominant subjects in her work; as she says, "They represent power and strength and their perception of the world and it's imaginative truth."

Ms. Kelly created the Stick People as a response to her stepson's challenge that she "couldn't keep anything simple." In these nearly abstract renderings of startling color and bold design, she seeks to express the personalities of the people she knows. With humor, her work captures the spirit of the Caribbean.
