The silence of the morning was

      destroyed by ten thousand

           geese honking and frantically

                 beating their wings in

                      an attempt to gain altitude.

The prairie was alive with gun fire,

                                   as a thousand guns

                                          spat fire and steel skyward

                                                in a hopeless attempt

attempt to gain an evening meal.

Two men sat together - apart,

near the edge of a levee

                                     retaining what remained

                                of the early teal pond.

The gray of the beard betrayed

the youth of the elder ,

as he sat long past the time of movement.

                                            The excitement in the eyes

                                                  of the younger man

                                                         told more than he spoke

                                                               or desired many to know.

                                                   Two men from different times

                                          and places awaited the arrival

of a goose not yet skilled in the

                           art of survival.

At last, he came slowly toward the

             all but hidden danger.

Came from the fog and paid

the price for the mistake he made that day.

                                Laid down his life

that two men might bond on the prairie.

                                             Bond and become

                                                    who You had in mind

'ere You caused their paths to cross.

And perhaps for the one to come,

                                          a different path to choose...
