Yesterday when feet were fleet

     and the miles seemed as inches;

          when no matter the distance,

                fatigue did not overcome me.

                      When days had thirty hours

                            and nights seldom ended.

                                   When the "Demon of my Youth"

                                         pursued me with a passion,

                                                and I was not ashamed of its victory.

                                                      more than adequate drink

                                               and had no fear

                                      of its dubious consequences.

                             When food was for more than just thought

                        and a calorie was surely a misspelling

                    of some place in Canada.

                         Yesterday,

                                  when I wore a younger man's clothes...
